The Dumbbell

This planetary nebula, the Dumbbell, is a fairly easy target in my 8″ telescope. Even on a Moonlit public night yesterday I was able to show it as a white and wispy white ball. Two weeks earlier at The Oaks I took this six minute exposure to bring out the colour:

M27 in Vulpecula is 8.0 x 5.7 arc-minutes apparent diameter – about 3.2 light years across and 1400 light years distant. It has a visual magnitude of +7.1.
